I can’t believe the end of 2016 is already upon us.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Foodbank staff, volunteers, donors, sponsors and agencies we have worked with over the year. Without your valuable support, we wouldn’t be able to distribute nearly 30,000 meals a day to people in need across NSW and the ACT.
This year has been a significant one for Foodbank NSW & ACT. We officially welcomed cricket legend Matthew Hayden as a Foodbank NSW & ACT ambassador, saw more than 5,000 volunteers help out at our new Distribution Centre, added a new Kenworth truck to our resources, and marked our one year anniversary operating out of our Glendenning Distribution Centre on October 25th, 2016.
Each year as the Christmas and New Year holiday season approaches, it reminds me of the Aussie spirit and how strong it really is as all of our wonderful volunteers and staff do their bit to help those less fortunate. Unfortunately, it’s a sad fact that more than half a million Australians will struggle to put food on the table this festive season, let alone buy themselves or their families something extra special. By the time we close the doors to the Distribution Centre for the year, our staff and volunteers will have packed more than 15,000 Christmas hampers and helped provide four million meals to feed those in need across NSW and the ACT.
If you’re reading this and wondering how you can support Foodbank NSW & ACT during its busiest time of the year, I encourage you to visit our website.
If I can leave you with one thought this Christmas, it would be this message; as we all prepare for a well-deserved holiday to enjoy with our families and friends, to remember those doing it tough this Christmas and that hunger doesn’t go on holidays.
On behalf of the entire Foodbank NSW & ACT team, I thank all of our supporters for a wonderful 2016 and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
From Gerry Andersen and the Foodbank NSW & ACT Team.
