The beginning of the year is always an exciting time of year at Foodbank! It is a time when our staff reflect on all of the accomplishments of the year that has past and are keen to push towards our goals for the year ahead. I would like to take this moment to wish all of our supporters the very best for a very successful 2019.
This year Foodbank NSW & ACT will celebrate a major milestone of providing 150 million meals to Australians families and children in need! Whether you have donated funds, food or volunteered your time – we are incredibly thankful for your help in the fight against hunger.
You will have seen it on the news. Regional NSW is still suffering through its worst drought in decades, in spite of many areas receiving rain. Those living in devastated farming communities will be trying to rebuild their lives for years to come as they hope that that recently planted crops will deliver them the yield they so desperately need.
Shiralee and her husband John are still in serious danger of losing their life’s work. Their farm has been in John’s family for five generations and they are still facing the hard prospect of being forced to walk away from it all. While facing setback after setback, they are bravely battling on.
As we prepare to pack another round of drought hampers, I want to thank friends like you, for helping drought-affected Australians get back on their feet. Shiralee wants you to know how much your support means to her: “Without people donating to Foodbank, we wouldn’t be able to hold out. It’s humbling when you have to ask for help but what can you do? We’ve got nowhere else to go.”
I am proud to share that 2019 marks my tenth year with Foodbank NSW & ACT. I have always had a passion for helping the disadvantaged and after working for most of my career in the Australian food industry, joining as CEO in 2009 was the perfect fit for me. I am still as passionate ten years later and know the team we have in place will deliver many more meals to needy Australians this year.
